§ 3-1. Enforcement—Animal control officer.

  • (a)

    An animal control officer shall be employed at such compensation as may be fixed from time to time by the city council. Such officer's special duties shall be to capture, take into custody and impound animals deemed in violation of this chapter, to be responsible for notification and retrieval of impounded animals by owners, and to sell animals deemed to be public property and to supervise the humane destruction of animals deemed a public nuisance.

    (b)

    The animal control officer shall have the authority to destroy immediately by whatever manner necessary any animal judged to be imminently hazardous to the public health, safety or welfare such as rabid animals, extremely vicious, uncontrollable animals, animals involved in a direct attack upon a human being, extremely diseased or injured animals, or other circumstances, which might constitute an emergency situation.
